Homemade Garlic Butter Dinner Rolls: 5-Ingredient Budget Side

  • Author: Maya
  • Total Time: 48 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Description

Soft, pillowy, and golden-brown homemade garlic butter dinner rolls made with simple pantry staples. These budget-friendly rolls are ready in about an hour and are perfect for weeknight dinners or special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F/45°C)
  • 2 packets active dry yeast (4.5g)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 to 3.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted (for topping)
  • 45 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • ½ teaspoon paprika

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and stir gently. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add egg, salt, and oil (or melted butter) to the yeast mixture. Mix until combined.
  3. Add flour gradually. If using a mixer, start on low speed. If mixing by hand, stir with a wooden spoon until too thick, then knead.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-8 minutes until soft and slightly tacky. It should spring back when poked.
  5. Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap and let rise in a warm spot for 30-45 minutes until doubled.
  6. Punch dough down gently. Divide into 12 equal pieces. Roll each into a smooth ball and place on a prepared baking sheet, leaving 2 inches of space.
  7. Cover rolls and let rise again for 15-20 minutes while preheating oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Melt topping butter and mix with minced garlic, parsley, and paprika.
  9. Brush rolls generously with garlic butter mixture.
  10. Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown. Tent with foil if browning too quickly.
  11. Remove from oven and brush with extra butter if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

Ensure milk is warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast. Add flour gradually as humidity affects absorption. Mince garlic finely to prevent burning. Rolls can be frozen for up to 3 months. For vegan version, use plant-based milk, vegan butter, and omit egg or use flax egg.
