Description
A kid-approved, homemade version of the popular Starbucks drink that is sweet, bold, and creamy. This recipe uses oat milk and brown sugar for a caramel-like flavor, turning morning routines into fun family adventures.
Ingredients
- 1 cup water (filtered)
- 1/2 cup espresso beans (freshly ground, dark roast recommended)
- 2–3 tablespoons brown sugar (light or dark)
- 1 cup oat milk (barista-style recommended)
- 1 cup ice (cubed)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for sprinkling)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Whipped cream (optional)
- Chopped pecans (optional)
Instructions
- Brew the espresso using a Moka pot, espresso machine, or strong French press. Allow it to cool slightly but remain warm.
- While the espresso is still warm, add the brown sugar and stir until completely dissolved, creating a dark syrup.
- Add the ice to a cocktail shaker or a mason jar with a tight lid.
- Pour the sweetened espresso over the ice in the shaker.
- Seal the shaker tightly and shake vigorously for 30 seconds until the outside feels cold and the coffee is aerated.
- Fill a glass with fresh ice.
- Pour the shaken espresso mixture over the ice in the glass.
- Slowly pour the oat milk over the top to create a layered effect.
- Sprinkle cinnamon on top (and add whipped cream or nuts if desired).
- Serve immediately with a straw.
Notes
Use warm espresso to ensure the brown sugar dissolves properly. Shake vigorously to create the signature foam. Barista-style oat milk provides the best texture. Do not store the mixed drink as the ice will melt and foam will disappear; store sweetened espresso in the fridge for up to 2 days if prepping ahead.
